Gemmageddon - I'm Here For You

Though it's not in the official patch notes for the PTR, the latest build (13850) had the following tidbit datamined and posted on MMO-champion:

"... any cut of uncommon gem now sells to NPC for 75 silver instead of 9 gold."

So, let's sing, "Your world is coming to its end.  You don't  have to be afraid.  I'm here for you.  Save your happiness for tomorrow, and today we'll drown in your tears."  Somewhere at Blizzard, the WoW concept lead just told his top economy-dev, "You're doin a heckuva job, Brownie."

Ok, ok - no more HIM or Gee-Dub references.  Is this bad news?  Not really.  Blizzard gets about 2-3 weeks to test a patch build on the PTR.  To understand how a drop in the vendor price would work its way through the WoW economy over a much longer span of time, they have to take it to the extreme.  The good news is that 75s won't make it ever make it onto live servers.  The not so good news is that Blizzard is seems to be openly considering dropping the vendor price of cut uncommon gems.  My best guess, the vendor price will likely be about half of what it is now - that's ~4.5 gold.

So, women and children first - all over the edge of 'amigawd!!' like little lemmings.  The prices of ore will fall.  Pyrite stockpilers will fill emboldened at first, and then later grow queasy as they realize there is little hedge left to their stores.  I'm not long on ore, so I don't foresee any trouble here.  I'll probably just blowout the rest of my stores via enchanting mats and call it a day.

Back to December we go.  The markets will be falling everywhere - shuffle your ore every which way, so you don't settle for stupid prices.

  1. I think the price is more right and likely goes live. To expect Blizzard to get a feel for the economy on a PTR realm where 1)nobody farms 2)people can transfer charachters with however much gold they have in game probably is not realistic.

They can barely get class changes perfect on the PTR, hotfixes coming days after big patches usually. They have said before that this is because there is just not as much data from the PTR due to less players then live.

TLDR - If a change does go through don't expect it to be more then 75s

  2. Maybe. A 10+-fold reduction in vendor price just isn't something I see happening all at once. For sure, if the cut price is 75s, the uncut price will be lower.

  3. Aeg,is absolutly right about the ptr. Download it and check out the prices on there. 3k for a rare gem. realy? its a vacume and i dont think they can just use it to see how much QQ they will get when it comes to the econ.

  4. Not the first time something like this has happened either. Back in BC cut gems used to sell for 3g, blizz nerfed it and made them sale for 1g cut or uncut. Not as drastic but along the same lines.

  5. The 9g price has I suspect helped the gold farmers make a lot of gold even by selling the ore at less than what we term the floor. Logically they should drop the price such that we dont prospect to cut and vendor but prospect of take gems use jc and possibly de for enchanting mats.

Depending on what and how you stockpile.....I really dont see this having an impact on me other than possibly changing what I do. Cut and vendor wasnt something I was into other than the yellow common gems.
